Three minutes of terror in the skies: Interactive flight map shows how Singapore Airlines jet plummeted 6,000ft in 180 horrifying seconds after hitting turbulence and air pocket over Andaman Sea

At 8:05am UTC - more than 10 hours into a 13-hour-long flight - some had got up from their seats to stretch their legs while pleasant and professional crewmembers distributed the refreshments. Others lounged in their comfortable seats, seatbelts undone, and finished off their breakfast as the aircraft soared peacefully through the skies above Myanmar at around 37,000ft. But moments later, the cabin was plunged into a state of utter chaos when the Boeing 777-300 hit a bout of brutal turbulence that saw the aircraft drop some 6,000ft between 8:06am and 8:09am. The effect was devastating. Passengers who were unfortunate enough to be standing were volleyed into the ceiling, performing involuntary somersaults before slamming back down to the floor, their bodies viciously contorted by the sudden G-force and the awkward landing. Those who had relaxed in their chairs without a seatbelt were lifted out of their seats, in many cases smacking their skulls into the overhead cabins and sustaining savage cuts and lacerations.

Pilot and crew error, as well as undiagnosed faults and misfortune, can all play a part in air disasters, which Boeing's 777s have been no stranger to since they came into service in 1995.

World's most turbulent flights revealed - and two of the journeys are in Europe

A 1,184-mile (1,905km) trip between Santiago in Chile and Santa Cruz in Bolivia ranks top. That is according to Turbli, a turbulence forecast website which analysed more than 150,000 long-haul and short-haul flight records from 2023 to discover which are the most jarring. The rankings, illustrated in a set of animated maps by MailOnline, follow the death of a 73-year-old Brit onboard a Singapore Airlines jet rocked by extreme turbulence. In the worst-case scenario, violent rattling can lead to structural damage to the plane itself and even harm passengers. Disturbance is ranked on a scale from 'light', which causes slight erratic changes in altitude, to 'severe', in which the aircraft is violently tossed about.

Twenty people are still in intensive care in Thair hospitals, including six Britons. Speaking exclusively to MailOnline from a hospital in Bangkok, where she is undergoing medical examinations, Ms Stevenson said: 'I was partially asleep and the next thing I remember is that I just flew upwards and crashed into the ceiling and then fell down really hard into the aisle.

The cover of the British society bible 's July issue is dominated by the painting, which was inspired by the mother-of-three's first state banquet of the King's reign and created by British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor. Kate - who has stepped back from public duties amid her cancer diagnosis - did not sit for the artwork. Instead, Uzor used different photographs to make the unique painting, declared 'a portrait of strength and dignity' by the magazine. Attending the first state banquet of King Charles 's reign at Buckingham Palace in November 2022, the Princess, 42, stole the show in a gem embellished white dress from her favoured Jenny Packham as she entertained the president of South Africa. Featuring a statement cape, the dazzling gown was paired with Queen Mary 's Lover's Knot Tiara and her late mother-in-law Princess Diana 's diamond and pearl drop earrings, all of which are captured in detail in Uzor's painting.

Introducing Saudi Arabia's first nightclub where booze is banned and it costs £1,900 to

Beast House, found in Riyadh's artistic Jax District, a vibrant hub for artists and creatives, has been hailed as the start of 'a new life' by excited revellers. While DJs, chic interiors and the opportunity for socialising are all present at the music venue, alcohol remains forbidden, with mocktails served at the bar instead and bouncers on hand to enforce the no-booze rules, according to The Times. Alcohol has been banned in the conservative Islamic Kingdom since 1952 after one of King Abdulaziz's sons drunkenly shot dead a British diplomat. But several rules have changed in Saudi Arabia in recent years since the accession of King Salman and his assertive son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The Valance sisters at war? How half-siblings who kickstarted their careers in Neighbours once enjoyed close bond... but politics threatens to drive a wedge between them as Olympia distances herself from Holly's 'anti-woke' beliefs

The Vallance sisters started their careers on Neighbours and once enjoyed a close relationship - but their vastly different politics is threatening to drive them apart. Popstar-turned-actor Holly, 41, has praised Donald Trump as 'fabulous', said left-wing ideas were 'cr**' and slammed her home country of Australia as too 'woke' in a series of interviews. Yet her half-sister Olympia, 31, has distanced herself from such views, saying although Holly had the right to say what she liked, they weren't views they both shared. Olympia told HIT WA hosts Carly Portch and Allan Aldworth that Holly 'rarely' returns to Australia since she based herself over in the UK with her billionaire and British luxury real estate developer husband Nick Candy. 'My sister and I have very, very different political views,' the Summit star insisted when she was asked about Holly's controversial podcast interview. She continued: 'It was like, "Oh my God," when she said all that stuff. I'm like, "Oh God! Everyone's going to think that that's what I think!" And I don't.' 'She has the right to say the things that she wants to say… but yes, that's not my opinion on anything.'

A man who set fire to set fire to a block of flats in retaliation for his step son being harassed has been jailed for six years. Craig McQuillian, 44, poured petrol on the front door of Thomas Shirley's 10th floor flat in Edinburgh in November last year, set it alight and walked away. CCTV footage captured by a neighbour's doorbell camera showed McQuillian calmly walking into a lift to return to the ground floor. A young child was in the property at the time of the incident and they notified Mr Shirley of the blaze. Firefighters were called and managed to put out the blaze before it took hold. However, a judge told him 'you only need to look at Grenfell Tower' to imagine the potential consequences of the incident. The High Court in Edinburgh heard how McQuillian carried out the attack because Mr Shirley had threatened his step son, Alexander McAdam. At the time Mr McAdam had started a relationship with Mr Shirley's former partner, Stacey Berkery, and the couple were expecting a baby together.

Rishi Sunak rebukes Johnny Mercer for going BARE FOOT on a train after he's snapped

Downing Street today rebuked top minister Johnny Mercer after he was snapped with bare feet on a train while penning a bombshell memo about Rishi Sunak. The veterans' affairs minister was photographed by a fellow passenger without shoes or socks as he travelled from London to Exeter earlier this month. Images showed the Plymouth Moor View MP working on his laptop, while close-ups of his screen revealed Mr Mercer's scathing words about the PM's team in No10. In an extraordinary missive, Mr Mercer blasted aides for allowing Mr Sunak to hog the limelight and acting as if he is still as popular as he was when he first took office. The minister demanded that more popular Cabinet colleagues like Penny Mordaunt and Kemi Badenoch are instead given more media appearances. But, despite the cutting nature of Mr Mercer's comments, much focus was also put on the minister's decision not to cover his feet while sitting among fellow train passengers. Asked whether Mr Sunak thinks it is appropriate to take your socks off on public transport, the PM's press secretary told reporters this afternoon: 'Absolutely not.' She added: 'I think the PM will probably talk to him about the feet thing.' Mr Mercer attempted to explain his decision to go bare foot in a social media post, writing: 'So some little weirdo has gone round snapping my laptop reading private messages from a private email account. 'My shoes and socks were off because I'd just cycled across Dartmoor in the rain. Shoot me now. Or grow up.'
