First Listen: Kem gets the coolest of remixes

(May 4, 2024) On each of Kem’s albums, there are at least a few songs that just totally swing. These tunes step over that line and allow Kem to display his jazz chops. “Set You Free,” a cut from Album II, is a tune where those jazz sensibilities come through.

It possesses a mid-tempo swing and a smooth, but understated bass line that provides the foundation for Kem’s vocal improvisations and some jazz flourishes on saxophone, flute, and organ.

On This Day in 1979: Peaches & Herb hit #1 with "Reunited"

May 5, 1979 - Peaches & Herb's "Reunited" hits #1

They were "The Sweethearts Of Soul" in the 1960s, but it was a decade and half later, with a different lineup, that Peaches & Herb finally made it to #1 with what became the duo’s signature song.

SoulTracks Lost Gem: Whitney Houston paid musical tribute to Dionne Warwick

Back in 1997, the 34 year old Whitney Houston, still in the latter stages of her Imperial Period, had a series of concerts DAR Constitution Hall in Washington DC. One of the shows was broadcast on HBO to much fanfare.

The concert featured a number of Houston’s biggest hits, but also included a cool live medley tribute to her cousin, Dionne Warwick. “Walk On By,” “A House Is Not A Home,” “I Say A Little Prayer” and “Alfie” were all 60s smashes for Warwick, and they sound great revisited by Houston for her audience.

George Benson issues great new single from long lost album

(May 2, 2024) George Benson is a living legend who has enjoyed an amazing career in jazz, R&B and pop for more than a half century. And now, as Benson has chosen to slow down his pace of recording and performing, he has reunited with his longtime label Warner Bros to issue a long lost "orchestral" album that features his takes on 20th century pop standards, Dreams Do Come True.

First Listen: Billy Brown of Ray Goodman & Brown returns with cool new single

(May 2, 2024) As one-third of The Moments (later known as Ray, Goodman & Brown), Billy Brown’s velvet-lined tones of soul helped craft a definitive vocal blend that solidified eternal R&B classics of the 1970s including “Love on a Two Way Street,” “Look at Me (I’m In Love),” “Sexy Mama,” and “Special Lady.” Although the original line-up of The Moments had split in the late ‘60s, Brown served as lead vocalist on several of the group’s early hits (including their first top-10 single, “I Do”) prior to the addition of Harry Ray, with whom Brown would share leads on the

On This Day in 1998: Next rockets to #1 with "Too Close"

May 2, 1998 Next hits #1 with “Too Close”

The story of the trio Next follows the trajectory of many memorable R&B groups of the last half century, but the scope and speed of the group’s rise and, ultimately, its fall, is more shocking than most.

First Listen: Lil' John Roberts calms the soul on "Your Renaissance"

(April 30, 2024) “Your Renaissance,” the new song by drummer and producer Lil’ John Roberts, is a relaxing and contemplative tune created during a time of tension and upheaval. The conception of this song and Elevation, the upcoming album that will include “Your Renaissance,” was the troubled days of 2020.

During that time, the world confronted first the COVID 19 pandemic that took so many lives and then the racial and social justice upheaval that followed the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbury, and the unjustified police killing of Breonna Taylor.

Happy 70th birthday to legendary singer Angela Bofill

Today we wish a very happy birthday to a good friend of SoulTracks and an all-time great singer, Ms. Angela Bofill, who was born on May 2, 1954. In a career spanning four decades, she graced both soul and jazz with a level of excellence that has kept so many of her song on “spin” years after they were originally released. And the health problems that plagued her beginning in the mid 00’s perhaps made her longtime fans appreciate her even more, even as she courageously and successfully fought physical limitations.

First Listen: Terri Green is "Caught Up' with great new remix

(April 29, 2024) A voice like Terri Green’s can seamlessly transfer to any genre. That voice attracted the best and brightest in the dance and EDM world into Green’s orbit, where she has shone on chart-topping dance hits under the name Terri Bjerre. She’s toured with the likes of David Guetta, and topped charts in Spain and Italy with the song “Oh La La La” as a member of 2 Eivissa.

First Listen: Aleksi Glick of Snack Cat delivers a touching tribute

(April 29, 2024) New York-based jazz guitarist Aleksi Glick is a talent who is rising up the ranks. Coming from a musical family and being raised on a consistent diet of jazz, rock and classical, the young artist, who has already worked with the likes of Grammy-winning talent Roberta Flack and J.
