Chronic Youth

Face it: if you’re over 16, you’re too old to be reading Tiger Beat and BOP. But for those who feel forever young, there’s Electric Youth!, a new “magateen” from Luis Venegas, a former art director and the creator of Fanzine 137. Borrowing its name from Debbie Gibson’s chart-topping album (and fragrance) from 1989, the Madrid-based teen ’zine has become a cult read for the fashion set and anyone interested in the city’s burgeoning youth culture scene (bushy guybrows and all).

Featuring a slightly perverse yet joyously naïve mix of fold-out fashion shoots, eulogies to fallen idols Brad Renfro and Heath Ledger, and soft-ball interviews — among the grenades tossed by the interviewer is, “How long have you been shaving?” — Electric Youth! is proof that in an increasingly infantilized culture some things never grow old.

Electric Youth! is available at Opening Ceremony in New York.
