Fourth Belize Forensic Science Symposium Launch

The Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries via its National Forensic Science Service and the Belize Crime Observatory, in partnership with the University of Belize, launched the fourth Belize Forensic Science Symposium at the Jaguar Auditorium, University of Belize. This initiative is part of the InfoSegura Project, a citizen security regional strategic partnership between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which has been central to enhancing the capacities of key institutions ensuring the security of Belize’s citizens over the past decade.

SIB says Belize’s economy grew by 3.2% in 2023; imports continue increasing

The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) reported on March 28th that the country’s economy grew by 3.2% in the fourth quarter of 2023. The report also showed an incidence of multidimensional poverty down to 10.1% in September of that same year. However, there was an increase in consumer prices and imports during the same period.

Caye International Bank receives Best Offshore Bank Award in CARICOM for 2024

Pan Finance Magazine named Caye International Bank (CIB) the Best Offshore Bank in CARICOM 2024, and its Chairman, Ambassador Joel M. Nagel, was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The recognition occurred on March 27th in London, England, where other institutions were also awarded for their excellent services.

Anke Doehm receives five-year sentence for Cruelty to a Child in the death of her adopted daughter, Faye Lin Cannon

Anke Doehm, a 63-year-old American national, was sentenced to serve five years in prison on April 17th at the High Court in Belize City. She was found guilty of Cruelty to a Child in the death of her adopted daughter, Faye Lin Cannon, who was 13 years old at the time of her death. The sentencing also stated that Cannon was sexually and physically abused and also showed signs of malnourishment. She will be eligible for parole after serving half her sentence at the Kolbe Foundation-Belize Central Prison. As part of her sentence, Doehm is to participate in rehabilitation programs available at the prison.

Maynor Ancona charged with Manslaughter by Negligence in the death of American resident Jennifer Griffith

On Thursday, April 11th, based on the advice of Director of Public Prosecution office, San Pedro resident Maynor Rene Ancona, 41, was formally arrested and charged for the crime of Manslaughter by Negligence in the death of American national Jennifer Lynn Griffith. The 46-year-old island resident died on Sunday, April 7th, after she was hit in the head with a conch shell during an altercation the day before with Ancona at a bar ten miles north of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye.

San Pedro Police have detained two individuals in connection with the death of Jennifer Lynn Griffith, a 46-year-old American national residing on the island. Griffith was hit in the head with a conch shell during an altercation on Saturday, April 6th, which resulted in her death.

Miss San Pedro hosts story telling time at the San Pedro Public Library

A storytelling event was held at the San Pedro Public Library in honor of Child Stimulation Month on Wednesday, April 3rd, at 10AM. The event, which ended at noon, included book giveaways, story time, and snacks and was a great time for kids and families to come together under the theme, “Let’s inspire young minds together and create unforgettable memories through the power of stories!” The event was organized by Empow.Her and Miss San Pedro, Mariel Calderon, in collaboration with the Ambergris Caye Rotary Club.

SPJC Marlins compete at ATLIB national football championships

The San Pedro Junior College Marlins: girls and men represented the Central region at the national football tournament organized by the Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize (ATLIB) and hosted by the University of Belize at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan over the weekend.

Five teams secure champions title at the end of the Indoor Volleyball Tournament

On Sunday, April 14th, the biggest indoor volleyball tournament event of 2024 came to an exciting end at the Angel Nunez Auditorium. The tournament finals were a huge success, featuring plenty of food, drinks, music, and marching band entertainment, making it a memorable experience for everyone. By the night's end, the champions for the different categories in the volleyball tournament were awarded for their hard work and great sportsmanship.

San Pedro’s Joe Pate tops bartending competition in Cayo

Well-known island bartender and now entrepreneur Joseph ‘Joe’ Pate won the grand prize at the 2024 Tiki League national competition on Tuesday, April 2nd, in San Ignacio Town, Cayo. As the national Tiki League champion, Pate will represent Belize at a competition in November in Guatemala, where he will join 19 competitors from across Latin America.

The celebrations took place in various locations across the island, including the popular Secret Beach on the northwest coast of Ambergris Caye.
