It has been many years since our current terms of service were updated. Yes, I am referring to that fine print most of us decline to read. The good news is there is exactly one additional sentence and it is just intended to streamline the registration procedures and membership management for our free level IPS membership. Here it is: Registration on PalmTalk.org without an existing membership in our society will constitute joining our society at a free membership level with associated benefits. In appreciation for your attention I will share a palm photo from my farm. Pigafetta , AKA the Black Wanga Palm

Windmill Palm Fire Damage
by Shrkgrrl- 1 follower

Hey there, fellow plant people Recently purchased a home with a gorgeous 30 year old Windmill Palm in the back. Today, a negligent contractor pointed his blowtorch at it, and it was engulfed by flames in 2 seconds. Fire was put out in less than 5 mins, though embers were smouldering up top for 25 mins. Fire department cleared us, and now we await a certified arborist to come inspect. However, we may have to wait a bit as our local arborists are busy people this time of year. In the mean time, can anyone share what they know about the fire resiliency of Windmill Palms? Is there any hope for us? What are the signs of a tree beyond saving? Seeing this blacken…

Today I cleaned my underused driveway and also used some wood ashes to give care to a nice Ravenea Julietae, Jubaeaopsis caffra, Dypsis (excuse me; Chrysalidocarpus) heteromorphus, Parajubaea, and Wallachia distichia in my back forty. I laid down the ashes, then topped with dead leaves, including palm fronds, then covered with wood chips.

A easy palm to germinate and grow if you have the patience to wait for them to germinate 12 months or more the kentia was one of the first palms to come my attention as a teenager now there just a common dime a dozen palm but back in the day they had there say in the palm industry and still do a very popular palm in the Victorian era for indoor cultivation I have seen them germinated by the hundreds of thousands in the nursery I worked with exports to holland and Europe being the market alongside the indoor plant hire business but you can’t beat them to this day as a top palm standing the test of time

New member, but have been getting some good info from everyone on this site for a while. Started getting some palms a few years back and got inspired to start a bigger garden. In DeBary FL, about 30 miles north of Orlando. Progress so far: 2 B. Alfredii, one on the left planted from a 15g in June 2022, other went in this week from a 25g. Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana planted from a 7g in November 2021. Side yard has a couple of flamethrowers, Chambeyronia Oliviformis, another king palm, Lanonia Dasyantha, Caryota Obtusa, Chamaedorea Radicalis x Cataractarum (most likely) and Chamaedorea Microspadix. Plenty of other tropicals mixed in, big fan of Plumerias.…

Recommended palm/s for within decking, close to house. Portugal.
by Michaelaflynn- 4 replies
I have bought a new build house in Portugal (near Lisbon) and sadly have to remove a pine tree which is growing within the decking as it is not healthy and very old. I would love to replace it with a Palm, but I am a newbie and looking for some recommendations. My plan would be to buy a mature palm, say 2-3m tall, and I would remove some deckboards if needed of course. I have attached a picture of the position, I imagine I'll have to prune some fronds as it grows up past the house. Requirements Withstand full sun? The palm will be in full sun for a lot of the time. Water. I can add irrigation if needed but would be ideal if it didn't require co…

Sylvester Palms in Corpus Christi, TX
by SoTXPalmNovice- 5 replies
Hi there! I just found this forum when searching for palm fertilizer. I need to feed my Sylvester Palms, and want do know what’s best for them and for encouraging fruiting without damaging the lawn and flowers around the trees. Your suggestions are much appreciated. My palms have 2-3’ trunks with gorgeous fronds, mostly. Some are yellowing/browning on the lower limbs. I use LeafGuard on the fronds to protect from cold and plan to use it to protect from the heat, winds, and over drying. What else can I do to make my trees happy and healthy?

palm haven for wildlife ...

this year saw about 4 hummingbird nests in my palm garden and I have noticed that they reuse the previous years nests as well. well here are the babies all mature and ready to take on the world. this nest happily sits right outside my front door and unfortunately, the mother scrambles every time a visitor is present. its great to know that every morning, my yard is alive with birds of all kinds and they seem to flock to my personal oasis in the middle of this desolate high desert community with nothing but green lawns and sparse foliage. we even have had a bobcat family roaming our yard now because it has become so dense with four baby cubs. i would be in…

Phoenix reclinata and lethal bronzing...
by ahosey01- 4 replies

Do these things really get lethal bronzing at the same rate as the other Phoenix? On the one hand, I read from many PTers that lethal bronzing is smoking all the Phoenix in Florida. On the other hand, I read from those same PTers that P. reclinata is a weed that won't die. Which is true - the unstoppable force or the immovable object?

Conditioning Heavy Clay Soil
by ahosey01- 4 replies

I'm aware of some of the techniques for loosening up heavy clay soil. Amending the top layer with organic matter, adding sand, adding gypsum if there is a decent sodium content. Anybody aware of any other techniques? Is there anywhere to get like 8 tons of perlite and till it into the soil? would that even do anything? Let me know, thank you! Adam

Skinny trunk palm suggestions?
by Merlyn- 1 follower

After cutting down one dead Queen last week, I am now dreading cutting down the other 4 or 5 that appear to be also infected with Thielaviopsis. This will leave the West side of my house open to the blazing afternoon sun, and I was kind of hoping that wouldn't happen for at least a few more years. As a possible replacement, I'm considering some skinny trunk palms that might give a bit of shade, but also not be ridiculously difficult to cut down and dispose of at some later date. The Queens are a solid 10+ inches in diameter at 20 feet tall, and that's a real pain to cut and dispose of. The crowns are also really huge, and ripped up the soffits during the last hurrican…

Good evening. My uncle is moving and gave me a palm that was from my grandfather’s wake in 1991. I believe it to be a parlor palm but not 100% sure and from what I’ve researched, I’m unable to propagate it. Is it in fact a parlor palm? Is there anything I can do to save it? How long can they live? There’s about 3 good fronds left, the fourth is turning brown. Should I cut the browning one back? Thank you for any help! at my uncle’s house: Day I brought it home in my horse trailer:
