New Poster + Cannes Teaser for Lanthimos' 'Kinds of Kindness' Film

Kinds of Kindness Teaser

It's official! Yorgos Lanthimos is returning to Cannes! It was announced this morning that his new feature film titled Kinds of Kindness is world premiering in the Cannes 2024 competition this May. We already posted the first teaser trailer a few weeks ago, and now Searchlight has revealed a brand new poster and a short 30-sec teaser celebrating the exciting Cannes news today. As his follow-up to the Oscar-winning Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness is described as an anthology film with three segments - following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability. The exquisite ensemble cast in this: Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer, and Krystal Alayne Chambers. I am so pumped for this! Especially if it's weird and as wacky as this trailer promises, with the whole cast going wild. Bring it on.

Here is Olly Gibbs' Magnificent 2023 Best Picture Nominees Artwork

2023 Best Picture Nominees

The 2024 Academy Awards are just over a week away - the ceremony is on March 10th. Leading up this big Hollywood event, many talented poster designers have been creating their annual set of poster designs for the 10 Best Picture nominees. However, there is one design that stands out above all the others year after year - the Golden Statue illustrations created by the designer Olly Gibbs. He creates a unique statue design for each of the 10 Best Picture nominated movies and adds lots of elements & tiny details from each one into the illustration. Gibbs started this in 2014, and has been creating new designs for the set of Oscar nominees each year. It's similar to the incredible set of Golden Statues created by the designer Olly Moss for the 85th Academy Awards (I used to have this poster framed on my wall). In celebration of the upcoming 2024 Oscar ceremony, Olly Gibbs has unveiled his set of 10 statues for the 10 nominees from 2023. Take a closer look…

Paint & Clones & Dr Jones - Our 10 Favorite Movie Posters from 2023

Best Movie Posters of 2023

With the year almost over, it's time to look back and highlight some favorites from the world of movies. Our writer Ethan Anderton used to publish his picks for the Best Official Movie Posters for years, but I've taken over and have curated a selection of my own top picks in poster design. Below is my personal selection of 10 Favorite Movie Posters from 2023. These aren't necessarily the "best" rather they're my own favorites that stuck with me. The qualification is that they must be official posters released by the distributor, not fan art or other posters created unofficially. This year I found quite a few of the more minimalistic designs really stuck with me - which was the opposite of last year. I'm a sucker for strong visuals always enjoy watching for new poster drops all year, hoping for some real winners. These 10 posters stuck with me as compelling, eye-catching, creative designs that really make me want to watch every one of the films. Check them out below.

2023 Oscar Best Picture Posters by Chelsea Housand / Edgar Ascensão

Oscar Best Picture Posters

Every year during the last month of the awards season, talented poster artists from around the world whip up a collection of posters honoring the Best Picture nominees. This tradition has been ongoing for quite some time now, with each artist attempting something fresh, pushing themselves to come up with dynamic, fascinating art each & every time. With the 2022 awards season just about to end with the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday evening (March 12th), it's time to feature some of the best posters. I'm always a huge fan of Olly Gibbs' annual statuettes series - seen here for 2023. However, below I've featured some of my favorite posters from two different artists - Chelsea Housand and Edgar Ascensão (we hired Edgar last year to create our membership page banner). Out of all of the Best Picture designs this year, these are the ones that got my attention and impressed me the most. That said, almost all of the posters this year from every artist have been outstanding - including from the illustrious SG Posters + Needle Design. Have a look.

'Something in the Design' - Our 10 Favorite Movie Posters from 2022

Our 10 Favorite Movie Poster Designs of 2022

With the year almost over, it's time to look back and highlight some favorites from the world of movies. Our writer Ethan Anderton used to publish his list of the Best Official Movie Posters, but I'm taking over and will return to highlighting some of my favorite designs. Below is my personal selection of 10 Favorite Movie Posters from 2022. These aren't necessarily the "best" rather they're my own favorites that stuck with me. I'm not as much a fan of minimalism (like many of my designer colleagues) as I am a fan of striking imagery - using visuals to convey a feeling, a vibe, a message. It's not only about aesthetic, as it is how you position and place the images to tell a story. This is easier said than done, because you can't just slap a character on the poster and call it today (this happens way too often). These 10 posters stuck with me as compelling, eye-catching, creative designs that really make me want to watch every one of the films. Check them out below.

Looking Back: Our 10 Favorite Movie Posters from 2021 - Dig This Art

Our 10 Favorite Movie Posters

With the year almost over, it's time to look back and highlight some favorites from the world of movies. Our writer Ethan Anderton used to publish his list of the Best Official Movie Posters, but I'm taking over and will return to highlighting some of my favorite designs. Below is my personal selection of 10 Favorite Movie Posters from 2021. These aren't necessarily the "best" rather they're my own favorites that stuck with me. I'm clearly attracted to color and striking designs, something that looks unique and is evocative. I also think it's important for a poster to capture the vibe of the film, and not just look cool though it's different from how the film feels. That's an important part of poster design. Just slapping any generic photo on a poster is dull and lazy, but creating art, making something vivid - that's what I love the most. Check them out below.

New Spielberg Sneak Peek at 'West Side Story' + Two More Posters

West Side Story Sneak Peek

"I am just so proud and honored that I got this 'shot' late in my career!" There's a new Spielberg movie arriving this December! In case you haven't heard? 20th Century has released another "Sneak Peek" 60-sec trailer for Spielberg's remake of the classic musical West Side Story. The first trailer debuted earlier this year during the Oscars, and we also posted the full trailer last month. This new teaser includes behind-the-scenes footage of Spielberg on set shooting the movie. An adaptation of the 1957 musical, West Side Story explores forbidden love and rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The story focuses on the love story between teens Tony, played by Ansel Elgort, and Maria, played by newcomer Rachel Zegler. The ensemble cast includes Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Corey Stoll, Brian d'Arcy James, Curtiss Cook, and Rita Moreno. I like this promo, I just wish there was more! One minute of watching Spielberg & Janusz Kaminski work is not nearly enough.

'The Mountains Are a Dream that Call to Me' Interview + Poster Debut

The Mountains Are a Dream that Call to Me Poster

We are proud to premiere this beautiful official poster art for the film The Mountains Are a Dream that Call to Me, an indie feature screening in the NEXT section at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival this month. Set in Nepal, the lovely, poetic film is about two people who cross paths on the trekking routes in the Annapurna region. One is a young Nepali heading down from the mountains with plans to leave and move to Dubai. The other is an Australian woman escaping life and a recent loss to find relief in the grandeur and beauty of the Himalayas. The film is worthy of our attention and I want to support it as much as I can, not only because we don't often see films from Nepal, but also because it's just a beautiful film about mountains.

New Promo Trailer + A Gorgeous Poster for 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire'

Portrait of a Lady on Fire Trailer

"Do all lovers feel they're inventing something?" Neon has released a new 30-sec promo trailer for Céline Sciamma's beloved Portrait of a Lady on Fire, to remind people of the release plans for this stunning French film. But they're switching up the original plan to play the awards season. The film will still open on December 6th, but only in New York and Los Angeles, for an exclusive "one-week run" to quality for the Oscars. Then Neon will wait for two months and re-open the film nationwide, in full wide release, on Friday, February 14th – Valentine's Day – only five days after the Oscars air. Set on an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a rebellious young woman. The two fall madly in love with each other. Noémie Merlant co-stars with Adèle Haenel, and a cast that includes Luàna Bajrami, Valeria Golino, Christel Baras, Armande Boulanger, Guy Delamarche, and Clément Bouyssou. This is an extra wait, but it will be well worth it when it is finally out in wide release in February. The painted poster by Akiko Stehrenberger (seen below) is also spectacular.

Agnès Varda Stands Atop Official Poster for 72nd Cannes Film Festival

72nd Cannes Film Festival

"All the way up. As high as she could go. Perched on the shoulders of an impassive technician. Clinging to a camera, which seems to absorb her entirely. A young woman, aged 26, making her first film." The official poster for the 72nd Cannes Film Festival has been revealed, just a few days before the official line-up is revealed as well. The artwork features a young Agnès Varda, only aged 26, making her first feature film. The iconic photo was taken in 1955 while she was filming her film La Pointe Courte, and it has been edited and colorized to make it look gorgeous as the official artwork for the 2019 festival. Cannes kicks off on May 14th next month, running until May 25th. The opening film will be Jim Jarmusch's The Dead Don't Die, and Tarantino's latest is expected to premiere there as well. Take a closer look at the 72nd poster art below.

'Pierrot le Fou' on the Official Poster for the 71st Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival - Pierrot le Fou

We're now less than a month away from the 71 Cannes Film Festival kicking off, so the festival has revealed their official poster art. I have a tradition of always writing about this here, because they always choosing some very appealing, eye-catching art and this year that is for sure the case. The image use in the poster / official art is from Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot le fou, which originally premiered at the Venice and London Film Festivals in 1965. The shot shows Jean-Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina kissing across two cars, and it's quite lovely and evocative and eye-catching, indeed. Honestly this art is kind of perfect, at least making it feel attractive again. I'm looking forward to the festival, which kicks off early on Tuesday, May 8th this year. Check out the official poster below and stick around for the official selection reveal this week, too.

Check Out This Infographic About the Evolution of Movie Poster Design

Movie Poster Designs

Time for a quick look back at movie posters over the last 60 years. We're all used to seeing Photoshopped movie posters these days, with massive floating heads, explosions and lighting effects, and plenty of other cheesy design tricks. However, movie posters have a glorious history, originating as hand-painted pieces of art that were just as iconic and unforgettable as the movie itself. This new infographic takes a look back at "The Evolution of Movie Posters", featuring 12 different designs ranging from the 1950s to the 00s. It highlights some of the best movie posters in Hollywood history, and discusses how the design and style of posters has changed over time. The Jaws poster is one of the best ever made, and the designs for E.T. and Star Wars are also perfect. Check out the infographic below to dive even deeper into the history of posters.
