| FRANK COVINO ITALIAN-AMERICAN ARTIST [ born 1931 - ] I am thrilled to introduce my readers to the sound priciples of creative painting as written by Mr. Covino. I share here is introductory essay to his book published in 1982. Now out of print - its sound principles will never age and his wise words will live forever. He clearly states that Academic realism is NOT ANY BETTER than other forms or styles of painting. I agree. I consider myself an EXPRESSIONIST-REALIST. I distort natural forms and colors and I do NOT attempt to paint photo realistically. Frank's words about the essence of 'creative art', are TRUTH. I have known about Frank's work for several years, but I never felt the need for his guidance - I just follow my own path through the creative making of art and paintings. Like Frank, I have done many many forms, sculpture, pottery, fabric, metal and much much more. Each medium challenging with its possibilities and limitations. BUT I am a painter first and foremost. My interest in FRank's teaching was RE-KINDLED by the audacious claim by a man named TIM JENISON who believes the great Dutch painter VERMEER, used a 'mechanical, color swatch matching , mirror on a stick contraption" , to COPY COLORS AND THEIR VALUES to paint his paintings. Tim's movie, TIM'S VERMEER" is his story about he and his contraption. I have studied the film in depth- and have experimented with his method- In my opinion of over 50 years as a professional artist- I believe the film is NOT a serious academic documentary. I believe the film is for pure ENTERTAINMENT, with the motives being, and the way things are done, in Hollywood and Las Vegas. HERE NOW in Frank Covino's book is what Vermeer and all the greatest Old Masters did to match color and value gradations that we all observe in nature daily. Velasquez has researched most thoroughly the materials and techniques of the Old Masters, and presents, in very clear terms, practical methods by which a painter today can modify store-bought oil paint to make it behave like the paint of the Masters -- fluent, obedient to the brush, capable of fine detail, etc. -- and all without use of solvents or any harmful materials. And he offers much else besides, such as how to make milk oil paint (his own brilliant discovery). I have read dozens of books and treatises on Old Masters' techniques. I believe this book is the one that gets it right. (I say this as a professional artist who has taught at the most famous art schools in New York City.) To me, this book is a gold mine. I recommend it to all. |
