Here's a site with free character references. It's from Got3d - 3d Models and Textures. Each character is a high resolution, full body in front of a green screen, All sides are projected. There are also some free models made in light wave and 3Dmax that can be imported into Blender. Though the edge loops were a bit screwy but maybe that has something to do with the Blender import script.
To get the models go to the 3D Model Store and there you will see a list of models for sale. Under the "Static 3D Models Peoples" click on the picture. On the next page you'll see a link on the picture on the right side for the free model.
Free = "This texture is free to use in your projects or your personal texture library.You may NOT sell or publish this texture in part or in full."

I had the good fortune to buy 3d World magazine which included an unlimited version of darwin dimensions evolver.Basically this program allows you to evolve any type of human, from a huge array of parents. The end product is an orignal human figure that you can turn around capture the screen and import it into blender for modelling.
The commercial version exports the humanoid figure as 3d model for maya, but it maybe possible for blenderheads to use the demo version to create modelling pictures?
@ian ross:
Is it a kind of MakeHuman?
To 'Me Yoda', the answer is yes but it is much more advanced i.e you generate your humanoid from 4 parents and there is a big choice, even alien type beings.The free version I got with 3d world magazine only allows me to generate images (full rotation of character), the commercial version produces actual 3d meshes.
If you are a good 3d blender model maker who enjoys working from multiple images, I suggest you review darwin dimension trial download.
wow! Those are huge! Talk about high quality ^_^
Thanks!
Thanks! I have been looking all over the internet for photo reference images like these.
Ian,
Good idea also check out facegen you can create by race and/or many other variables. Cost US $299 but the demo version allows you to make many different combinations: http://www.facegen.com/index.htm
"3D human faces from 1 or 2 photographs or at random.
3D face shape & coloring controls.
Apply faces to any polygonal mesh and UV map.
Recognizable face coding in 130 bytes."
Wow, very useful. Thanks so much! =)
