Lagos

Lagos was an important harbour at the time of the Great Discoveries and it was from here that most of the African expeditions put to sea. Surrounding the old centre of this former capital of the Algarve (1576 tot 1756) still stands an almost complete city wall. Apart from being a seaside resort and a fishing port, Lagos is also an important yachting centre organising international regattas.

From the harbour near the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira to Ponta da Piedade.

The City Wall - The Ramparts were built on top of older walls between the 14 and 16C.
Praça Infante Dom Henrique - With a statue of Prince Henry the Navigator.
Mercado de Escravos - Europe's first slave markets were held here.
Forte da Ponta the Bandeira - 17C.
Ponta da Piedade - 3 km to the south.

Museu Regional - The regional museum adjoining the Igreja de Santo António contains an interesting archeological collection and an ethnographical section devoted to the Algarve.
