All political movements have symbols representing the fundamental values of its political philosophy. Anarchism is no exception to this rule, and has quite a few very well-known symbols. Such symbols are used to forward the essential message of the philosophy and be a trademark in the “market” for political ideas.
The classical and original anarchist symbol is the black flag, which has been used by anarchists since the 1880’s. The color was chosen because of it being the negative of all colors, an anti-color. It represents the negation of all flags, be them symbols of nation-states, ideologies or movements.
Another symbol for anarchism emerged during the 20th century: the circled A (or Circle-A). The origin of the symbol is not clear, but it is still one of the most successful images in the whole field of political symbolizing. A much newer symbol for anarchism is the Libertatis Æquilibritas, incorporating three different symbols representing fundamental anarchist values. This symbol represents the core values of individualist anarchism, while the before-mentioned are symbols of anarchism in general.
Anarchism.net uses all three symbols at the top of each page, to represent the purpose of the site’s content in joining of forces of different anarchisms. The black flag is the most obvious, and is the background on which the Circle A shows on the left and famous anarchist thinkers in the middle. The Libertatis Æquilibritas is shown on the right.
