Fall
honors for current and former Spirit players
With the new
Millennium almost upon us, there is much news to report from the
Fall season.
First off,
congratulations to Sarah Rahko from the U18 team, who was selected
to the U17 United States National Team Pool. She will join the National
youth teams pool along with former Spirit player and current St.
Louis resident Carmen Bognanno, who was recently selected to be
the U16 National Team Captain.
In other Spirit
Alumnae news, Rebecca Splaine, a Junior at Brown University, was
named to the All Ivy League Team, and Jen Robb, a Junior at Middle
Tennessee State University, was named an Ohio Valley Conference
2nd Team All-Star.
Two Spirit Alumnae
were named NSCAA/Addidas Women's Scholar Athlete Regional All-Americans:
Sarah Hilgenberg, a Senior at Wellesley College, First Team All-East,
and Lindsay Nohl, a Senior at William and Mary University, First
Team All-South.
Also four players
were named to 1999 NSCAA/adidas Women's All Regional Teams:
Katie Dempsey,
Senior, Franklin Pierce College: First Team, Division 2 - New
England Region
Shannon Corliss,
Senior, Endicott College: Second Team, Division 3 - New England
Region
Kim Bohlin,
Junior, Bowdoin College: Third Team, Division 3 - New England
Region
Andrea Pawliczek,
Sophomore, Emory College: Second Team, Division 3 - South Region
Closer to home,
many Spirit players and coaches had successful seasons with their
high school teams.
Two teams coached
by members of the Spirit coaching staff won State Championships.
The Under-15
head coach Jen Mead and assistant coach Gretchen Young also teamed
up to coach Newton North to a victory in the Division 1 Massachusetts
High School State Championship.
Jen was also
named the Boston Herald Division 1 Coach of the Year.
Newton North
also had four Spirit players take part in their Championship season:
Ariel Samuelson of the Spirit Under 16 team, and Beth Goldberg,
Julia Brown and Ariel Carr of the Under 15 team.
Marian, coached
by Under-17 coach Paul Athanasiadis, and assisted by Under-18 coach
Mike Gorenberg won the Division 3 Massachusetts High School State
Championship. Paul was also named Coach of the Year by the Eastern
Mass Girls Soccer Coaches Association, and Division 3 Coach of the
Year by the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald and the Metro West Daily
News. Marian's Spirit contingent consisted of Katie Capello and
Karyn Sporer of the Under 18's, Katie Donovan and Kristin Moan of
the Under 17's, and Holly Maloney of the Under 15 squad.
Two other Spirit
players were also champions this season. The Under 15 team's Kate
Takvorian and the Under 18 team's Miriam Litt played for New England
Prep School Champion Philips Andover, and Taryn Provencher won the
New Hampshire state title with Manchester High School.
Many players
also earned individual honors. Special recognition goes to Sarah
Rahko, Katie Capello and Meaghan Vondal of the Spirit Under 18 team.
Sarah, a National
Youth Team Pool player (see above), who played for Londonderry (NH)
High School, and who recently committed to Boston College, was named
a High School NSCAA All-American for 1999, as well as being named
a Lawrence Eagle Tribune All-Star and a League All-Star.
Katie played
for Marian High School in the Fall, and was named the Division 3
Player of the Year by both the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald,
as well as being named an Eastern Mass. All-Star, and being named
an All-Star by the Metro West Daily News, the Lawrence Eagle Tribune,
and the Catholic Central League.
Meaghan, who
played for Westford Academy, was named the Eastern Massachusetts
Division 2 Player of the Year. She was also named to the All-New
England and All State teams, was a Lowell Sun Player of the Year,
was named to the All-Scholastic teams for both the Boston Globe
and the Boston Herald, as well as being a Dual County League All-Star
